Trauma tips:

A common maladaptive coping strategy that many people use to deal with their trauma is to try and avoid it. Unfortunately, this is not a strategy that works long term and can in fact make the symptoms that you experience worse.

Here are some strategies that can help when you’re dealing with trauma.

-       Own your emotions; It’s ok to feel however you’re feeling. Don’t ever think you have to apologise for being sad, angry or just a bit blah!

-       There is no such thing as the ‘right’ way to process your emotions, do what feels right for you. Obviously if you start to engage in not super positive behaviours to avoid your feelings or numb or feelings, this isn’t beneficial to you. Seek out support from loved ones or from a mental health professional

-       Get support; Getting support from loved ones doesn’t mean mean that you have to talk about your trauma, it can simply be about being around people and having a laugh!

-       Get back into a routine; routine can bring stability and comfort, something that can be very much needed when dealing with trauma.

-       Do not make any major life decisions – whether that’s buying, selling, moving, quitting or a tattoo, give yourself time to feel more like yourself.

-       Look after yourself; make sure you prioritise what you need when you need it.

And remember, recovering, feeling better, moving forward – whatever you want to call it – takes time. Be kind to yourself, knowing that things will get better.  If you would like to book in for some extra support, feel free to contact us on 8838-8687 or book an appointment online and come in to see one of our friendly Psychologists.
