Staying Socially Connected

Socialising is an important means for establishing human connection and there are different levels for which we all need this. Human connection can be helpful in times of high stress or uncertainty, whether that be through face-to-face connection or virtually with others. Social support can increase our resilience for managing stress and anxiety, where we have the opportunity to speak about our experiences, worries and challenges.

Staying socially connected is a crucial aspect of our well-being and happiness. Social connections not only provide us with a sense of belonging and purpose, but also offer emotional support and practical assistance when needed. Strong social connections can also boost our self-esteem and improve our overall mental health.

There are many different ways to stay socially connected, including in-person interactions, virtual connections, and participating in group activities or events. In-person interactions such as spending time with friends and family, participating in community events or groups, or volunteering, can provide us with meaningful experiences that

Some other examples of helpful ways to promote connection with others are:

  • Join online or face-to-face interest groups

  • Meet your neighbours

  • Engage in conversation with someone at the supermarket

  • Spend quality time with those you are living with

  • Organise routine catch ups with others

  • Check in regularly with those you care about

  • Offer help to others

Socialising provides us with a sense of community and support, allowing us to share experiences and connect with others even from a distance. It is also important to keep in mind that social connections can vary in their level of intimacy and closeness. Some connections may be more superficial and casual, while others may be deep and meaningful. Having a diverse network of social connections can provide us with different types of support and experiences, helping us to navigate different aspects of our lives.

It is also important to note that staying socially connected can be challenging, especially for those who struggle with social anxiety or lack social support. In such cases, seeking professional help or joining a support group can be a beneficial step towards building a stronger social network.
